Guitar Tutorial: When I Survey

16 Nov 2009

Alex Nifong shows us how to play 'When I Survey', click on the video to play! Alex is a good friend and part of the international Worship Central family. He's based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Cheers Alex, I always look forward to the next video coming out! Learning how songs I enjoy listening to are played really helps build up a kinda toolbox of how to add interesting parts to the other songs I play. Is there any chance you could show us how to play that delayed sounding electric guitar part to Consuming Fire on the live Happy Day album?
Hey Alex and the worship central team, Thanks for all the work and resourcing that comes out of this place-its so good to see a body of people giving and being about others! fantastic...and great work on this alex-you have a really beautiful way of adding texture, layers and interest to the songs. I just wanted to make a suggestion out of a place of wanting to see worship teams supported and grown. I think the guitars tutorials could be of far more use: when I see most electric guitarists coming into worship bands they usually do one of two things-solo or play open chords. But the solos are often innapropriate and the open chords are clashing with the rhthym guitar. What electric guitarists (such as you alex and others who feature in such teams, and me after learning by experience!) discover is that the best way we can add texture and intrest while supporting the congregation in worship is by these mid range riffs and chordal additions (as we saw in this tutorial). But finding G in a different place on your guitar neck takes a bit of musical knowledge that many are not taught while focusing on their favourite guitar solos! So maybe a useful place to go with these tutorials would be going right back to basics-rather then look at individual guitar riffs-'how can you find open chords in other places', 'when NOT to play to make your playing more effective', 'how to use suspension and resolution in your playing' etc....all things being used in the majority of the tutorials I've seen on this site but not being told. Anyway! Thanks so much guys, you're all a real support to churches around the country...Be encouraged! My comments come out of a place of thankfullness and wanting to see more of the goodness already taking place! Big Jesus love to you all, Rob
I want an e-bow. So badly.
A video as suggested by Rob would be great. As with learning anything though, I think learning the guitar needs a little bit of a lot of approaches. Obviously a certain amount of theory is needed and so is a familiarity of what notes/chords are where on the neck. Like you say Rob, experience is the key, but it comes very slowly to most of us. I find I've been developing quicker now I have some of the knowledge necessary (CAGED chords for example have opened up a lot to me) and I can use videos like the song tutorials to see how what I hear in songs relates to what I can play on the guitar. I know the link between the two would come with practise and time, but any short cuts are always welcome. :o) Worship Central team - please keep up with the good mix of videos, both the general tuition videos and the song tutorials. Thanks guys, Mark
Inspired by U2's "Van Deimen's Land" I'm sure!!...very interesting arrangement. I think that this is a creative way for arranging other songs with that nice 'drone' to them. Corey

this is without a doubt the best tutorial on this site also the parts for this song are brilliant cheers Alex and worship central
