Hi
I'm a church leader looking to appoint a volunteer worship pastor from within the congregation, but even though the role will be voluntary (at least for now) would like to draw up a job description.
These things are always easier when you have something to start from and to stimulate your thinking rather than a blank piece of paper!
Does anyone out there have a/any job description(s) you could send me, or point in the direction of anywhere I might be able to find some?
Really appreciate any help.
I take your point Neil and agree I can't expect too much, however I believe there will be interest from more than one person so to have something set down in writing would be a good starting point for people to consider whether or not it's a role they can take on/are called to, and for me to be able to talk through with them.
I'm just looking for some examples to use to help me think this through and of course would need to pare down a job description for a full-time/paid role of this nature.
Fair enough, that makes sense. I'd suggest emphasising at least a reasonably high skill level in music - often overlooked in these types of post. Clearly biblical/theological knowledge and spiritual maturity is vefry important, but musical capabilities are too, especially if the person is going to be involved in training new team members and/or potential leaders.
As an aside, I have always thought that if you're looking for a volunteer to take on a ministry then the best way to do it is to think/pray about someone specific and ask them directly. I'm not sure how to put my reasons into words to be totally honest (sorry it's unhelpful...) but I think having an open application system for a lay ministry role is a little unnecessary. You'd never use such a system for appointing elders.

Thanks Neil.
I have no plans for an open application system! And I'd normally take the approach you suggest i.e. approach someone directly. However two people (within the worship team) have already expressed interest in the role, so there is a need to define what the role is more clearly as part of the process of discerning who God is calling to it.
Ah, I see! In that case you're definitely doing it the right way. :-)

Perhaps a slightly different tack from Neil, but whilst ability is important, character is MUCH more important in my view.

I'd agree with MattF - I'd also not give anyone a title/position for a while. If it was me I'd get each of those who have expressed an interest to serve in leading worship alternate weeks/months but do all the picking of songs etc yourself - if they prove faithful in doing the graft without the glamour it is usually a good indicator of the right character.
If they aren't up for doing the job without a title I'd be cautious about giving them more responsibility than their character can bear.
Ah yes, I did neglect to mention character. It's definitely the most important factor in picking anyone to do anything with any kind of leadership responsibility.
I think I came it at it from the angle that the character requirements are kind of a given, and tried to be a little more 'role-specific'.

Double oops. My computer went all silly and I got impatient... ;-P

Since you're looking for a volunteer, I'd steer clear of expecting too much. You really only need someone who can lead by example in terms of how they lead the sung worship, as well as devoting a certain amount of time to mentoring/pastoring members of the music ministry team.
