What's your vision?

I've been a worship pastor for several years now, and for many years I did not have a clear vision. When people would ask, I would spout off a few goals and maybe some values that I have for our worship teams, but it was clear that I did not understand and function out of a real vision. It wasn't until two years ago that I finally understood vision and began to lead our teams through clear vision and values. One of the things that drew me to worship central was the fact that there is a very clear vision (encounter | equip | empower). In fact, we've even adopted much of this language into our vision because it incapsulates what we are about as a worship ministry. I've found that as I meet with many worship pastors in our area that many do not have a vision that they can articulate, and I guarantee that if they cannot communicate their vision then their teams cannot. So, I am curious for those of you that lead the worship at your church, what is your vision? How do you implement that vision? |

I have a limited scope of responsibility right now, I only volunteer as much time as I can, which is a couple hours a week (wish I had more!!!!). But for the time I do have I hope to: Make God a reality for the congregation. Allow those I lead with to find joy and honesty in what we do.
It’s simple, but that’s all I have time for right now! God willing I’ll have more time to give; how excuse-ish does that sound?! But it’s a reality, only so many hours in a day… :)
ah, implementing... missed that. While I'm just firing neat things off I might as well through solving world hunger as well huh?! :)
Right now it is mostly on a personal level, I'm seeking to find Christ real in my own worship so I can hopefully bring my own honest heart for the people I lead with to see. I try to select songs which allow the youth I'm leading for to be themselves, yet in a way that still proclaims Christ. (i.e. fast songs with strong theological content, it shouldn't be an oxymoron!) I always close with a prayer directed at our need for God's reality in our lives, and our need for God to help us find that reality. I pray a bit, but not as much as I wish I could.
The reason for this goal? At least 50% of this high schoolers will leave the faith upon entering college. Why? Because the church did them a horrible disservice by making Jesus more distant to them than their surrounding culture. (or so the "Barna Group" research studies indicate...)
PHEW! thats pt. 2 of my strategy. If I ever get to a part 3 I'll know I've arrived!
Inspire | Engage | Unite
is a little vision I've been having for our Church.
It seems quite often that our congregations are only singing and not necessarily worshiping through the times of music. I want to reinvigorate our worship style and inspire people to be able to worship through the music (including the worship leaders).
Thus engage the worshiper... and finally unite what can seem, at times, quite a disparate congregation. Starting of course with uniting the music team under one banner...striving for one goal.
Sounds like a lot, but this is only a brief outline of my vision!
God Bless,
Steve
Good question Caleb, I too believe communication and direction is key to a healthy team dynamic.
From January we are going to be using "To know Him and make Him known" as our vision / mission statement.
We aim to fulfil this vision by having 3 values (nicked and adapted from Caleb!) that we all as a musical worship community at St. G's will all commit to:
In brief these values are:
- A commitment to spiritual development and accountability
- A commitment to developing our gifts.
- A commitment to being a strong community that cares for, values each other and seeks to serve and reach out.
Chris.
