Our church is going to be holding a modern carol service on Sunday. We simply thought it would be carols but put forward in a 'modern' way. This turns out not be the case and we have to have modern worship songs that are like carols. Please can you help by offering suggestions?
...and that presentation of BIG Philness was brought to you by Big Phil!

we are very traditional at our church but we as a band are trying to introduce some new ones. Hillsong have modernised alot of Christmas carols and they have a cd of them. One in particular that we are doing is O Holy night. A very nice song,
But if you're looking for songs, maybe Holy Holy, by tim hughes, sometimes feel you could use that at christmas and maybe Glory in the highest? I don't know you might think there totally not christmassy ones but yeah:)
God is good.

Hi Phil, we're having a similar service but we're going to mix carols in with modern songs that are a bit more specific to Christmas like 'Light of the world', 'Love came down' and 'Glory in the Highest'... Hope that helps! Luke
Phil, "When the music fades" is a good song to use around Christmas time. Helps to be reminded that it's about more than the songs.
If anyone's heard of Godfrey Birtill, his song "Raise Up The Standard" has some pretty good lyrics relating to Christmas:
"Hear the glad sound the Saviour comes
The Saviour promised Lord
Let every heart prepare a throne
And every voice a song
He comes the prisoners to release
The chains and fetters break
The iron bars before him burst
The cell's foundations shake"
Check out his website for full words + chords etc: www.godfreyb.com
Slightly older is "From heaven you came (the servant king)" by Graham Kendrick.... or various other things he did for "Make way for Christmas"..... some of which have dated more than others. I still like "Peace to the world", for example.
Also Kendrick's "Like a candle flame" is really good.
There's a few good ones on the Resound worship site (http://www.resoundworship.org/) - my favourite there is still Joel Payne's "What kind of throne".
I wrote one which I still think is OK......

Hi all!
Thanks for the tips..
We will use the "Drummer Boy" / Jars of Clay version to start the christmas service :)
We have listen a lot of good versions of christmas songs, like the Hillsong CD but they seemed far too complicated to play with our worhip team. Too jazzy. Sounds great in a CD but to play it live it's another thing...
... I realised I meant "Peace to you", not "Peace to the world".....
Graham Kendrick. Dreaming of a Holy Night - beautiful album, very poetic, a few songs that would be considered modern carols.

This song may work for you:
Christ Is Exalted by Ryan Flanigan. The chorus and first verse are:
Jesus God of all glory
He's Jesus oh what a story
Of God's great mercy
God sent His Son
Incarnate Word named Jesus
God and man
Humbled Himself
Born of the Virgin Mary
Without sin
Hi
We're using Beautiful Saviour - the version (of this old hymn) on Darlene Zschech's Kiss of Heaven album and Glory in the Highest from the similarly-titled album by Chris Tomlin.
Love both of them.
Blessings
Ian
