Hi,
My name is Brian Macleod and I'm a drummer who is also a music student based in Edinburgh. For my Honours Project I have decided to film a Drum Instructional DVD, as well as have a Book/CD Play-along package to go along with it, which describe various concepts and techniques of how to play drums well in Church. I have decided to call it The Church Drummer: Modern Drumset Techniques for Today’s Worship Drummer.
The main theme I set to pose to drummers is that just as the word 'theology' sometimes scares Christians, so does the word 'technique' or 'rudiments.' I aim to dispell that by stating that out of technique comes musicality, creativity and musicianship.
I set to pose questions to drummers in all walks of life who maybe has not much time to practice but is teachable and wants to learn. How, therefore, can they serve the church better through their gifting (ie. playing drums)?
The basic outline of the Project is:
To provide materials for drummers in all walks of life within the Christian Church community. This will be in the format of a Drum Instructional DVD, Book and CD play-along of 8 popular Contemporary Worship songs such as 'In Christ Alone' and 'Praise Is Rising.'
The DVD lays out practical concepts such as:
- playing with a band
- following the worship leader
- groove and feel
- rudiments
- song choices, dynamics and spontaneous worship
- technique
- tuning tips, hot rods and brushes focus
- time
etc
The Book outlines what the DVD says but also includes articles, transcriptions and charts, and concepts such as:
- The Drummer's Heart
- What Should A Drummer Believe
- Church Dynamics
- More than 100 footnotes
- Comprehensive Bibliography, Recommended Reading and Listening Section
etc
The CD includes play-along tracks of some of the most popular Contemporary Worship Songs sung in Church such as:
- In Christ Alone
- Praise Is Rising
- Blessed Be Your Name
This will include versions at Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Levels.
etc
I'm looking for some feedback from drummers and non-drummers alike, and if this looks like a worthwhile project.
cheers,
Brian
Brian,
That looks fantastic! And, even though I don't drum so much any more, I sure would welcome that! (And I know a few people I could recommend/pass it on/give/force/lend it to)
It looks like a great resource that could be used in churches and for churches everywhere (although it may need translating :P)
Do it =)
Blessings, Nic x
That's lovely! Really impressive... but yea anyway Nic is right, it may need translating (translate it in Indonesian first please haha) because i couldn't speak in english well :DDD
God bless you.... xx

Thanks for the comments. At this point an Instructional DVD has been filmed, with the book being 80% Complete and the CD also finished. Currently updating the website for this project, with the re-development about to hit off in the next few weeks. Check out how it currently looks:

Here is a play-along track available for Free, without drums. It is Chris Tomlin's classic, "How Great Is Our God."

Looks like a really cool project, looking forward to seeing it in all its glory!

Hi Brian, I think this sounds like a great idea. As a drummer myself I'd welcome something like you are planning on doing to look over and it would be an ideal tool for all drummers in churches across the land! I say go for it! I think you would have a market certainly!
Dave :-)
