Hi Steve,
I think that a lot of the time I do this without thinking but where I come accross a tricky rhythm I find it can help me to think about the spaces between the beats, which is kind of what drummers do, I think. I'll often slow it right down and tap out the 4/4 rhythm with my foot then practice the elements separately before 'gluing' them together.
I have just listened to the track for the first time and it sounds to me that Ben is essentially playing 16 beats to the bar whilst the vocal line falls pretty well on the beat - I'm not sure if this will come out on the web page but I think that it is something like this
Guitar 16s - 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 +
Guitar strokes V ^ V ^ V ^ V ^ V ^ V
Vocals God so loved that he
When applying the accents to the guitar you can do up (^) and down (V) strokes all the time but only sound the ones shown. The singing is either on the beat or on the half beat.
This may or may not be right in this case and may just come accross as gobbledygook - but I hope it helps?
Murray.
