Hey guys, How much do you read the bible compared to other books?? Is it important to be reading the bible more than books written by theologians of this day? I've been doing a lot of reading recently and it occured to me that i've been reading 'christian living' books more than the bible... so (a very rough example) over a couple of days I may do 4 hours of reading where 3 hours will be reading books written by people like C.S Lewis, N. T Wright, Dallas Willard etc (or some fiction stuff)... with 1 hour out of the 4 reading the bible. So at the moment my ratio of other books to bible would be 3:1 in the ammount of time I spend reading if you get what I mean!!?? As I asked above... is it improtant to be reading the bible itself more than other people's view on the bible and theological principles? Or doesn't it really matter? If it does matter what ratio should we be aiming for? 1:1? Blessings guys, |

0:0 :p
But theoretically I think we should be reading the bible more than other books. It is THE book after all. At least if you read other books try and read a similar subject matter in the bible just to make sure you are getting the real deal rather than some mis-guided interpretation.
But hey I can't talk those are just my thoughts :)
Interesting point!
For me there's no fixed ratio for everyone or even for the same person. I do try to read the bible more - but then sometimes I think we can get to a point or a situation where other books can become more effective. Not because they're better, but because sometimes things can be difficult to relate back to how we should live / act today, and other books can really help home in on those points that while in the bible, aren't as obvious or immediate as we'd like! The best way I've found of looking at it personally is using other books to supplement bible study. But if it's focussed around a good interpretation of the bible then it sounds good to me :)
Very helpful guys. Thanks :-)
I do think that we should be reading the bible more than other books, but on the other hand if you're forcing your self to read the book more than others it becomes more of a chore than anything else, but again yes i do agree that the bible should be the most important book, which isn't saying that other books can't be good for us. on the contrary reading other stuff can be good for us
