One church, One voice

This song has gone through a couple of revisions thanks to many of you good people here. And now's it's finished and (almost) ready to appear on a CD of worship songs written by local church songwriters accross Scotland (spearheaded by David Lyon and hopefully coming out this summer.)

There will be at least two tracks on it that have been birthed and developed on the forum here - so be encouraged that the honing process that goes on here can be really helpful!

We come to worship you To bring you praise, to hear your truth One church, one voice, one song We thank you LORD for all you’ve done

We come to worship you As different people joined as one One church, one voice, one song All saved by grace, through Christ alone

Chorus: Great is our God Great is our God

We come to worship you In times of trouble, times of doubt One church, one voice, one song And in our weakness You are strong

We come to worship you To celebrate when life is good One church, one voice, one song To honour you, our Faithful One.

Chorus x2

We come to worship you With all the gifts you give to us One church, one voice, one song To see your will on earth be done

It look's like you don't have Adobe Flash Player installed. Get it now.

Hi Paul, It's always good to have a new call to worship song and yours does the 'Blessed be Your Name' thing of recognising that no matter what our circumstances are our purpose (and joy) is to praise Him. The lyrics communicate directly and work really well and the guitar feel is really nice and catchy. Some suggestions if I may: 1) To make it slightly easier to pick up, you might consider making the tunes of the first and third lines of the verse more similar. 2)I like the 'Great is our God' line but when singing along I think a congregation might find it tricky to know how long to hold the 'great'. You might want to lengthen the line or just regularise the rhythm. 3) For me, the bridge doesn't fit - the change in feel is too drastic. Nice to hear some St Silas music - a friend of mine, Michael Reader Harris, goes there. Ian

Hi Paul liked the chorus as with Ian - I didnt get the bridge great muscician ship but it sounded quite calypso - Id need to listen a few more times to see whether I liked it. I did like the focus and I think its a song that has potential. Just some first thoughts Pete :)
hi paul, nice song idea here, i like the simplicity of it. ian has given you some good ideas. i would love the chorus to be sung to God in the first person like the rest of the song, ie "Great are you God" or something like that. any way of making the tenses more consistent there? for me the bridge is a bit of a stretch lyrically. im not sure many people could sing 'the wedding party has begun' and really get what they were singing? and im not sure if theologically its correct, isnt the wedding party whene we get to heaven or have i misunderstood? i think the line 'too often weak but you are strong' could be better. weakness isnt necessarily a bad thing as you are portraying, and compared to God we are always weak. if you said 'we maybe weak but you are strong' or something like that might help that bit? keep working on it i think youre church will love it when its done. God bless, gav.
Thanks for the comments guys. I'd agree the bridge as is doesn't fit, but it needs something different to break up the V/C/V/C strucutre because otherwise rhymically it is all pretty similar. Originally I had a 6th verse which really felt a bit too much, so got reworked as a bridge. I quite like the straight time to instrumental change at the end of the bridge, but don't have the skills to make it work in the reverse direction! Gav - can't believe you're suggesting I yoda-fy the chorus. ;) I agree the "too often weak" line could be better. I'll need to look again at the wedding party line. You may be quite correct about it being a heaven thing. Cheers all! PS Ian: MRH (as we like to call him) is a top bloke!
Hi Paul very good lyrics and the rythm ...I like it!!! I think it would be "crazy" to sing and dance together "in front of his thron". Have you tested to play it as reaggy with drum, bass and orgean??? I´m still sitting here at work, but when i´m back at home I will try it. Have a good time and God bless you Thomas / from Germany
yeh i broke my own songwriting rule there paul with the yoda thing!!!! lol!! what about 'God you are great' instead? cheers, gav.
Hi Paul, This one's quite a musical extravaganza, lovely sound, lovely words. The bridge came out of nowhere I felt like I'd been tango'ed (in a nice way!) There's a lot of good comments here already, nothing more to add, other than get the fiddle going too! mmmmm Great God are you Nice to see Yoda back on the go again! lol! God Bless Neil
Hey Paul. I have to confess that at the start I thought "Yikes!" and "Twee" but having listened to it twice only I fear this thing may very well be buzzing around my head all night! I really quite like it now. :-) Wondering if it's a bit long. Ditch the bridge IMHO. I'm thinking I like the idea of simplicity for some reason in this one. A bit of a two verses plus chorus number? cf Over all the earth!? We obviously can't quite place it musically - Reggae? Calypso? I actually was liking the idea of African/South African groove with that guitaring up the neck. cf Graceland! Doing CLAN this year mate? Mart
Thanks Thomas, Neil and Mart. I thought it was time we had a worship song that was a reggae/calypso crossover (reggalypso, if you will). ;o) I've no idea how I would describe it. Mart, will not be doing CLAN kids this year, though Jenny and the other St Silas guys will still be doing it. They'll be looking for a new guitarist if you know anyone that's free... I will however be at P+Gs for the Willow Creek conference next week. Are you around?
Hi Paul I'm really keen to go to the conference next Tuesday but I"m afraid I can't. I was hoping to help out with the worship music too but... Hope you all enjoy/benefit from it. First time in the new building? (Sorry, maybe you shouldn't post this here ... hardly relevant to the thread proper ... message me) Mart
