Oh The Blood

Hey guys... I have just finished writing a song which is quite different to the sort of songs I usually end up writing, and I was looking for some feedback... I tend to write "big" songs of declaration / anthems etc naturally (I'll hopefully upload some of these later), but this is more of a reflective song, possibly most suitable for use in communion. This is a song that's ultimately just focussed on the truth of the cross of Christ and the power and love that was displayed by Jesus at Calvary... I am hoping that this song just engages people with Jesus and helps them to fix their eyes on Him and what He has so amazingly done for us... The recording I've attached was made using my webcam microphone this morning - so the quality is far from good! but I hope you get the feel of the song from it... I'll aim to record it properly at some point... N.B. The song should build towards the bridge more than it does in the recording, but the trouble is my mic distorts on the lowest volume setting so I had to keep it all quiet!!! (even standing far from it didn't work!)... will have to purchase a mic at some point! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh the blood of Jesus That claims me as a chosen son Oh the blood of Jesus That cleans me white as snow Oh the blood of Jesus That makes me righteous in Your sight Oh the blood of Jesus That speaks a better word Upon the hill at Calvary Where streams of blood and water flowed With outstretched arms, my Maker gave His life My soul was bought through perfect sacrifice Oh the love of Jesus From Heaven's throne He humbly came Oh the love of Jesus The Lamb, for sinners slain

Hello Chris, I think this is really lovely. The words are good and the tune is nice - really memorable. It reminds me a bit of 'Oh to see the dawn' but I prefer yours as it is musically more interesting. It goes a little bit low in the verse (low G). There aren't many good communion songs so it's good to have this. My only criticism is that I think that the bridge is the weakest part of the song and I am not sure it is necessary. Can you send me the music to me through the contact section please? God bless, Ian

Thanks for your comments Ian, I really appreciate them!!... In some ways I agree with you about the bridge, and it is in a slightly different register to the rest of the song - which is deliberate... I'm just slightly reluctant to let it go as it's a moment in the song where the congregation can actually sing out and declare the "worth of God" (i.e worship) rather than just sing truth (if that makes sense?! - I can clarify what I mean if necessary!!)... I reckon the recording didn't do that section much justice as i had to keep volume to a minimum when recording to prevent distortion when actually I wanted it to grow a lot more... My intention for the song is actually for there to be a instrumental bridge after the chorus which builds dynamically to the "big" sounding bridge that's easy for the congregation to sing out from, and then fades back to the reflective chorus... but I completely know what you mean and will see if there's any way I can tweak it, or think of an alternative route I could take the song... In terms of the low G, I agree it's very low (although still used in some very popular modern worship songs) and I would probably be more inclined to up the whole song a tone and do it in D - especially for the congregation... although I do actually find that most modern worship songs that come out these days go WAY too high for most congregations!! (i.e. top Fs and Gs etc) ...I guess that's a debate for another forum though!! Thanks and God bless

Hey guys,

I've uploaded a slightly clearer recording of this song...
Feel free to let me know your thoughts!

It's definitely a more traditional style song than what I usually write!!

God bless,
Chris

i really love the words of this song, it really is slightly different to the songs put up here. it does remind me of matt redmans nothing but the blood.

its god to see a song that stands out, from the rest.

Nice song Chris, it really has an old soul to it. My one criticism would be that the melody is *slightly* predictable, particularly in the chorus, where I have heard that same movement in many songs before. That being said I think it is strong and could be stronger with a few "alt" melodic movements. Nice work bro.
