O Breath of Life

Been working on a kind of re-write of the old hymn - basically wanted to use the fantastic words but make it more accessible to a congregation that wasn't brought up singing hymn-tunes. In reality I've only used the first verse, but it's the heart of the song.

So I've uploaded a quick acoustic recording of it too, and it's obviously still not finished, feel there's work to be done on it, which is why I'm putting it up here for thoughts, feedback and critique!

P.S. Apologies for many things out of tune, new strings and sore throat ;)

Lyrics:

O Breath of Life come sweeping through us
Revive your church with life and power
O fire of God cleanse and renew us
Equip your church to meet this hour

As we draw near to you
Would you draw near to us

Spirit breathe in us
Let your fire fall
Spirit breathe in us
Let your fire fall

O light of Christ come bursting through us
Transform a world lost in the dark
And as we pray, oh Spirit lead us
To take your hope to every heart

As we draw near...

Sounds great and sounds mostly finished. Great job.

I think it maybe wants to go somewhere after the 2nd time chorus. Have you thought about a bridge or middle section? Maybe going back to the pre-chorus would work.

Thanks Robert,

You're right, and I think there's a number of options for a bridge..

You could work on something to take it 'further'.. same subject, but adding another level of depth to the 'journey' of the song as such.. but there's a need to make sure this doesn't add so much that it actually begins to take away from the point of the song..

Or you could go for something more simple, possibly something already used in the song (or similar to), like the pre-chorus, as you suggested.. which would just keep the song simple and things home a bit more, yet there's a danger with this, too, that it ends up just being a waste of breath and song space.

Am working on something at the moment, trying to strike a balance between adding to the song, yet keeping it simple and short!
