New Ideas for Christmas?
19 replies

I am leading worship for our carol service on Dec 20th and I really could do with some fresh ideas. The service needs to be traditional and the worship band consist of me on keys or guitar and a congregation of anything from 5 to 55ish. Ideas?

I really liked the "Glory in the Highest" refrain to go with Angels from the Realms of Glory from last year and I know stuff and ideas may come on the December podcast but any ideas either from Tim + Al or any other worship leaders out there or in fact anyone who could give any ideas would be a great help!

hi paul, i recommend you check out www.resoundworship.org for some great new christmas songs, in particular 'what kind of throne' and 'on christmas day'. plus listen to christmas offerings by third day. they have done lots of modern arrangements of carols. cheers, gav.
There's that beautiful old carol called 'In the Bleakmidwinter' - stunning poetry - that we've done and reworked a bit with the band in the past. You can strip the chords and changes down to make it sound really simple, but haunting. People know it in a once a year kinda way. a beauty.
Do you have the chords for 'In the Bleak mid winter'?
Interesting that 'In the bleak midwinter' should come up. I really struggle with this carol and I have to admit that I'd be pretty unlikely to pick it for any services I was leading. Each to their own, and poetic the words may be, but most of it bears very little relevance to the Christmas story as it's likely to have taken place. And it's only the last verse that could really be described as worshipful. Perhaps Christmas is a time more than others when we permit a bit of poetic licence and imagery in our songs, but for me,'In the bleak midwinter' goes a little too far in maintaining that western idyllic winter snowscene of a first Christmas that's hard to reconcile with what probably took place. I agree the music is hauntingly beautiful, though!

Hi all, I used these chords: IN THE BLEAK MID WINTER E C#m F#m B In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
 E C#m A B E Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
 A C#m E B Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
 E C#m A B E In the bleak midwinter, long ago. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
 Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
 In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
 The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
 Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
 But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
 Worshipped the beloved with a kiss. What can I give Him, poor as I am?
 If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
 If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
 Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart. Matt, I agree with you! But I'm not sure it matters too much - if anything Christmas is all about Jesus coming to us where we are, and as it snows in Britain I'm happy to let that one slip on poetic grounds! Al
Just playing that through, the chords for the "Snow had fallen snow on snow" line don't make sense to me.. or at least for the version I've heard. Hows the melody line supposed to go? ..oh and I've never heard verse 2 na d3 before, but they make sense melodically so ok :P
We've used this chord progression to the traditional melody of O little town of Bethlehem which went down well. E Bm7 A/C# E O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie E Bm7 A/C# E Above thy deep and dreamless sleep, The silent stars go by Cmaj7 Bm7 E A/C# Bsus4 B Yet in thy dark streets shineth, The everlasting Light E Bm7 A/C# E The hopes and fears of all the years, Are met in thee tonight
Curse the formatting! The Bm7 comes on Still, Silent and Met. In the third line the Cmaj7 in, Bm7 dark, E shineth. Hope you get the gist...
Hi Rob Chords hopefully in position above the line, and melody in [square] brackets for the melody. Hope it makes sense! A [A]Snow [G#]had [A]fal[B]len C#m [C#]snow [C#]on [G#]snow, E [B]sn[G#]ow [F#]o[E]n B [D#]snow,

Just found this site and hoping someone out there might be able to help me. We need to bring the children's worship in our church into the 21st century - can anyone suggest some simple contemporary christmas worship songs for use with children in the age 3-8 range? Many thanks
