I wouldn't worry about the language you have currently - some people will like it and some might not get it. You know your church - if they'll understand it, go with it. For me, I like the poetry of it.

I really like this. Great update of a lesser known hymn.
Mr Hatch, in terms of the lyrics, "encircling gloom" refers simply to the darkness that surrounds us and the other line: "O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent till the night is gone..." refers to the Power of God blessing us over (O'er being a contraction of over) moor and fen, crag and torrent (essentially meaning: over any terrain we may cross) til'(i.e. until) the night is gone.
In essence the whole line could be read: "Your power blesses me and goes with me over any terrain I may cross until the darkness/night is gone."
Hope that makes it clearer.
Becky, I agree with Paul in that you shouldn't change the lyrics. It's brilliant just as it is.

If you do use it do you mind posting/contacting me via worship central and letting me know how it goes? I'm not in the worship team at church and don't really have a natural way of testing songs out, so that would be helpful. Also, it's a long shot as I'm sure there are loads, but are you by any chance from City Church in Birmingham?

other than that this is a really good version of the song.
