Lack of commitment from band members

How can I encourage members of our band who don't seem to be fully commited to band? They never turn up to rehearsals and dont seem to fully engage when we're leading worship? But it isnt as simple as getting a new bass and lead guitarist, as we are a small village parish and don't have anyone to replace them. |

This might seem simplistic - but my first question is 'has it been explained what is expected of them?' - by the worship leader or the church leader, or anyone else?
From there, part of the answer might be to think about gently introducing a Music Ministry 'covenant' - a simple document that sets out what your church expects of those leading and being part of a music worship team.
Another point to consider is that you might have to let them go, if, after having received a bit of teaching/advice on Worship, and the leading of, they do not react in a positive way. This might seem painful, but obedience may pave the way for God to bless you in ways you weren't expecting.
I feel for you. Just some intial thoughts....
Pete
I don't know whether i have told them exactly what is expected of them, though i have asked that they make sure they turn up to all of the rehearsals and of course to mass when we're leading.
This 'convenant' is interesting - i may look more into that - though it may be a little too formal?
Thanks for your comments Pete :)
James
I agree with Pete and think that is sound advice,
It's often lack of communication of vision / expectations that can cause problems, if you do the "covenant" maybe meet and work on it together as a team then if they "break" it it's easier to bring up as they wrote it!
We also hold a review every term, to meet individually and see what God has been doing, where they have grown and maybe some areas they could work on and whether it's right for them to still be part of the team.
This gives them encouragement, guidance and goals to aim for and builds a healthy mentality where they are asking these questions themselves during the term.
Blessings
Chris.
Hi James and guys,
I had a couple of thoughts.
How about going out for a bite to eat with the band and just getting some community going so they actually feel part of a group. If they feel involved they're much less likely to drop out of a rehearsal because they won't want to let the group down.
Other thing is to get them to come to the WC days as a kind of day trip out together.
Maybe go to a gig together?
Hope this helps but totally understand the difficulties,
Luke
Love what everyone has said so far! Great advice.
It is so true what the Bible says about people perishing because of a lack of vision. I think as leaders God gives us vision for our team, and we have to keep casting it out to them, "making it plain", as it says in Habakkuk!
Before someone joins our team, I do a similar think like what Pete was saying - a "covenant", with questions like... Can you commit to coming to practice on Wednesdays from 7-9? Can you commit to staying pure in heart and free from selfish ambition? Can you commit to being a team player? Can you commit to learning the songs in the way I've set out for us? etc.
I'm about to do this commitment questionnaire/interview with the rest of the team who were already on the team when I became the worship leader. Just to make sure we're all on the same page. So people know why we're doing what we're doing and so they know where we're going.
Hope this helps!

Hey guys!
Yeah this is all really useful stuff - i shall be trying out all these solutions you've all suggested - thanks very much!
God Bless you all for helping out - i am so grateful for this online community as i have no one to talk to about 'modern worship' at our 50 strong rural church! Well - no one that is a worship leader/musician who can help from their own experience if that makes sense?
Thanks again
James
Hey dudes and dudettes!
Unfortunately, the reason for our bass guitarists lack of commitent was because he didnt feel he really wanted to commit to church stuff every week, and has since told me he is leaving the band coz he cant commit to rehearsals/masses.
So if you could pray for us to find a new bass player quickly that woudl be great - we live in a small village so not many people to choose from lol!
Blessings!
James
Sure no problems James...
Lord, I pray that with your help James' church will be able to resolve their current problem of being without a bass player. I pray that you will send the right person to take this oppurtunity and that they will be able to bring in fresh ideas and help the worship team build as a group and help others worship you in doing so themselves.
I pray this in your precious name Lord,
Amen
God Bless

While you're praying - we need a drummer quite desperately for the same reasons....
No problems Vics... *prays same-ish prayer, changing names and church and position within the worhip team*
God Bless
