How do you get the most out of a college/school Christian Union

My College has just started a CU and there are about 20 Christians who turn up every week and it's brilliant just to realise there are people around who you share a faith with. The CU at my college is run by two second year students and bless them, they're not really too sure what they're doing. My question is how do you get the most out of a CU and what should anyone be aiming to get out of it?

from my point of view you get out what u want to get out

i help to run my high schools CU and we have discussions every week and talk about some hard topics which you might not normally talk about

however you can do teaching and worship depending on time and what you want to get out of it!!

try asking the members who go what they want to get out of it then take it from there!!

evangelism!!!!
that, in my opinion, is the whole point of a Christian Union. Ok, well maybe not the WHOLE point but it is soooooo important! Being at school is such a great oppurtunity - you're slap-bang in the middle of atheists, who are often very open to talking about their beliefs.
- Last month we ran a "Missions Week" at our school (running lunchtime cafés with free smoothies and games, a football tournament, christian magician, 'toast a christian' workshop, a friday night event with bands and a gospel talk thing)
- And at easter we bought 1200 lollies, attached a bible verse to each one, and gave one to every student.

Thats a couple of ideas that I would reccommend. - And we average on about 8 people a week. With 20 people you could do so much more!
You could join New Generation - it's a free, christian organisation who support Christian Unions. They have a band that tours around the UK every now and then who do free evangelistic gigs, and they send out a newsletter twice a year with new ideas for your CU and lots of general encouragement.

It sounds like you're obviously doing it pretty well atm tho - if you've got a load of people who come back week after week then that is pretty cool :) It's so hard to get students to come along, when saying that you're off to "Christian Union" isn't something that particularly aids your street cred! How do you manage that!?

This is so interesting, and really relevant too- i feel exactly the same about the whole 'street cred' thing! I help to lead our school CU too and the hard thing is getting people to come at all- we have about 10 people who come every week. sometimes the key is just letting people know that you're there.
we have a CU band that plays in school assembly and once every half-term we lead the hymn on a friday morning, which is fun. so usually we do a jazzed up version of something and then do more modern things as people come in and out of the hall. similarly we have speakers coming in once a term as well so that even the people who don't believe in God come along too. The irritating thing we have is that in the assembly thing os that we can't use the phrases "Our God/Lord etc" or "hallelujiah" or "Jesus" or "Christ" which a nightmare to find songs for!
Sometimes its hard to find the balance between encouraging those who come regularly, but making it assesible to those who aren't even sure what they believe, so I think that's important to find too.
I really hope it works out though, because its so much fun and a great way to find community, and make great friends!
