Tim and Al talk about nerves a bit in the september podcast. To echo what they said on the podcaste these nerves need to be embraced. God calls us to cast our anxieties on Him in 1 peter 5:7 and nerves arent a bad thing. when I first started leading worship I was so nervous and nowadays i find myself not so nervous as I am leading a lot. However I tend to try and push myself a little bit further out of my comfort zones by not depending on things so much i.e leading without music.

I would say dont stress out about it. We all get nervous when we are seen to be "in front of everyone" but at the end of the day we all gather for one reason and that is to worship God.

Make an effort to get to know your band members because they are the people you tarvel the journey with and we all want to journey with friends.

Hope this encourages you.

Debbie I know exactly how you feel. Just adding to what Jamie said. I think it is also important to realise that you are there in that worship band because God has put you there and not because of anything else.

Tim Hughes often uses the phrase 'I am loved by God and therefore I am successful'. Thinking about it from this perpective really has helped me in the past and calmed the anxiety that I will muck up.

Ultimately echoing what Jamie said, we, including the band, are all ultimately there to worship the living God.

Like Jamie I was really nervous when I first started! As you settle in they will go or at least be tamed a bit, and to a certain extent they're good - I've found they've kept me alert which is much much better than being too relaxed! I've fallen into that trap a couple of times and far more things go wrong when I'm laid back than a bit nervous.

"I would say dont stress out about it. We all get nervous when we are seen to be "in front of everyone" but at the end of the day we all gather for one reason and that is to worship God."
Really good point, agree entirely. :)

You know its an interesting point. I agree with the above, I try and remember that (even though its a bit cliched) we really are worshiping to an audience of One. I know this doesn't necessarily take away the anxiety of the practicalities, but I find it really helps.

hi guys

ive been worship leading only for a few months, and i was soooo scared when I first did it! I have however quickly found that nerves are good as they're part of being involved in something important.

BUT

Feelings that you cant do it, or that you will muck up etc etc are all lies from the devil.

If Gods called us to lead his people into worship then we can be sure he'l equip us and enable us to serve him. After all a master doesn't give his servant a task and not supply the tools!!

The human errors (such as bad notes or shaky timing) do not matter to God as worship is not about the music, its about our hearts and our readiness to give glory to him.

All nerves can be quenched with a good does of the holy spirit too, so prayer is a must!

God bless

Don't worry about it Debs. If you do 'muck up' just have the strength to carry on =]
I know God will be there with you, just cast all your worries to him and he will help you through =]

I remember being really nervous when I first played in the band on a sunday. Using a mic for the first time is a scary experience! Being a flautist, my trick was to keep looking at the music when the crowd freaked me out. I found that as I got used to playing, the nerves got better and I didn't hide behind my music stand as much.

Concentrate on worshipping God rather than worrying about the people listening, I find it helps me to forget my nerves. Will pray for you Debs. I'm sure it'll all go well, hopefully the band will be supportive; keep your eyes fixed on the One you're worshipping!
