Hello everyone! Thought I would share a song I have written with you called 'Higher Than I' that we have been doing at my church, St. Thomas' Crookes in Sheffield. This recording is in the key of E, however, we do it in D as there are a few high notes. Would love to know what you guys think! Nick

Any chance you could post some lyrics?
I really like the pre-chorus! Completely unexpected and yet somehow completely fits! (I must admit it is a bit delirious-esque though!)
I must admit the chorus does conjure up a strange image for me. "You are the rock that is higher than I" conjures up an image of a giant rock, towering over me, almost menacing. It may just be my interpretation of your lyrics, ie, I think I know exactly what you mean, ie Jesus/God is our Rock and he is higher/so much more important than us, I'm just not sure the two images fit together in the same declaration.
The song has clearly been recorded to an amazing standard, so I'm not sure how open to change you are at this stage, but you could potentially change the chorus to something akin to: "You are my Lord/God, so much higher than I"
That way, the end bridge bit, about being held in his everlasting arms wouldn't be too thematically different, and could, in fact, add a complimentary feel to the ending, ie this God that is so much greater than we are loves us so much that He holds us in His arms and will do forever.
All in all, I love the song, the vocals and the recording/production values, just wasn't too sure about the line in the chorus...
God bless!
Alex
ditto could we have the lyrics please?
nice song nick i really enjoyed listening to it.
the sound is very fresh, but im not sure how congregational this song is in most churches, it probably wouldnt work at my church as we're used to songs that are more straight forward melodically. (we're baptists what can i say?!!) i could be wrong on that tho.
great production tho and great solos aswell.
for me the rock that is higher than i makes perfect sense i wouldnt worry about changing that if it was me.
the breakdown bit at the end is a bit odd tho, with all the falsetto, im assuming you dont do that bit in church?
God bless,
gav.

Thanks for your comments...
I haven't got the web at home, so sorry it's taken a while to respond.
The lyrics are:
Jesus, You are my strength
You help me soilder on when I'm not feeling strong
Jesus, You are my help
When my heavy heart is tearing me apart
You're the name on which I call
You're the hope on which I fall
CHORUS:
Cause You are the Rock that is higher than I (x4)
Jesus, You are my help
When life is crumbling apart You fix my broken heart
Jesus, You are my prayer
When I'm in despair I feel Your presence there
You're the life in which I need
You're the bread on which I feed
CHORUS:
***
We generally don't do the tag at church, however, the rest of the song works well now people have got their heads around it. I think the chorus is pretty instant, but people didn't get the 'I' bit on the melody at first.
When I write, I try to write stuff that is a little different to the norm, which sometimes makes it a little more challenging for people to cotton on, but I find perseverence (and also knowing when I am beat) makes the difference.

Psalm 61:2 is where the "Rock that is higher that I" is from
I like the tag. This is a great song.
Did you record that in a studio or off the main mix? It sounds really good.

Really really love this song musically and the recording is fantastic.
Lyrically I think it could be stronger for a few reasons:
1) "Soldier on" suggests struggling along which isn't maybe the kind of help you associate with Jesus. Just "Carry on" might work better.
2) Making the last half of the first verse and first hals of the second verse more different.
3) A couple of words seem to be there just for the ryhyme. You don't really "fall" on hope. And your presense "there" doesn't sound quite right to me.
4) "You are the life in which I need" would either need to be "the life which I need", or "the life in which I need to be" to make sense.
Sorry, those suggestions don't really reflect how much I liked this song. I just think you could get it better still with a little tweaking.
Paul
Hi Paul,
Thanks for your comments. I am going to be re-recording this song for an album that will be released next year, so I may tweek some of the lyrics slightly, so I apprechiate your comments.
The reason I used, 'Soldier on' was because sometimes we don't FEEL like worshipping God or enduring the storms of life, and the word just seemed to fit well to suit the image. However, I do agree with your second comment, and have been giving that some consideration.
Cool. Cheers for the comments. Will definitely them into consideration.

I recorded it in a studio (Steelworks, in Sheffield where the Spice Girls have previously recorded) and at home. The drums are just BFD drums.
It was produced by a guy called Andy Baker who has produced Philippa Hanna (www.philippahanna.co.uk), The Gentlemen (www.the-gentlemen.co.uk) and other Christian artists. He works for a company called Resound Media (www.resoundmedia.co.uk) and his work is great! Check out his productions and his own worship material.
Nick, love the song
