Heaven's Baby
13 replies

This is a Christmas song that I co-wrote (lyrics) and revised, thanks to extremely helpful comments by Gavin Ball who suggested that I add a chorus.

Let us enter the stable where baby Jesus lies.

All around are the angels whose voices fill the skies.

Let us bring to that infant the tokens of our love.

Given here in our worship of Him who's from above.

Heaven's baby, gift of love,
Heaven's baby, God with us.

Let us savour the joy that came with him to earth.

Giving thanks for the mother who gave to Him His birth.

Bread of life and redeemer, the gift of God to man.

Born in hardship and want to fulfil his Father's plan.

Heaven's baby, gift of love,
Heaven's baby, God with us.

If we listen to Jesus and from our sins we turn.

God will grant us His pardon, the peace for which we yearn.

Life that's new and eternal to us He's pledged to give.

Welcomes us to His kingdom with Him in heav'n to live.

Heaven's baby, gift of love,
Heaven's baby, God with us.

Can someone give me some feedback pretty please?!

Hi Ian, Thanks for sharing your song words. It sounds very much like a modern hymn (in a Stuart Townend sort of style) - I think sometimes hymns work quite well with an added chorus or coda (eg Amazing Grace by Chris Tomlin and Tim Hughes' version of When I Survey). It would be interesting to hear the melody becuase there are quite a lot of words in the verses, but I like the theme and use of words.
Thanks for the feedback Leon, You should be able to access the melody by clicking on the play icon below the lyrics. Ian

Hi Ian, Nice Christmas song. It's very different from most of the other stuff on here but that's not a bad thing at all and it works well as a nativity song. I'm really liking the little riff in the beginning - for me it's got a bit of an Eastern feel (I think you're using 4th here which sound really nice). I'd be tempted to pick up on that theme and maybe embellish on the "Easternness" of it. Guess for me it creates an image of the Kings coming to see the Christ child. Almost like their "theme music" if this were in the context of a movie or musical. Other thought was to lose the bar between the 2nd and 3rd line of each verse (ie: All around are the angels whose voices fill the skies.
Let us bring to that infant the tokens of our love.
) I think it might flow better - for me, at the moment it loses some momentum. Really like the lyric of the whole song and especially the 3rd verse. You've got the gospel message in there very succinctly - well done mate! Good example of a few words saying a lot. Really nice stuff - have you considered writing a 4 part vocal harmony for this (or at least the chorus)? I think some classical harmony applied to this (rather than just stacking 3rds and 4ths) might work a treat here - not that I'm opposed to stacking - stacking is GREAT but for this style of music I think some well constructed well spaced harmony could really work. Any chance of posting the chords for us (I know it doesn't all align but we'd get the general gist.) Good one Ian - and well done for posting on everyone else's songs too mate. I see you've been quite busy. Blessings Wayne
Hello Wayne, I really appreciate your detailed comments. I went to CCC for a while when I was a student. Well spotted on the 4ths. I find it so interesting that people hear different things in my songs from what I intended! I wanted the 4ths to give the feel of a rocking cradle but I'm really glad that it sounds Eastern. I might have a play with that. I have thought of removing the pause between the 2nd and 3rd lines. I had a pause between the 3rd and 4th lines as well that I removed at Gavin Ball's recommendation (and my brother's - he is a pro violinist). I have a publisher interested in it at the moment and they made the same suggestion as you about harmonising the song. I will definitely have a go at that. I have discovered that American publishers in particular are very interested in choral pieces for church. In the meantime, if anyone would like a copy of the song (voice, piano part and chords), please put your email address below and I will send a pdf. I have to give a lot of credit to my co-writer, John Williams (not the Star Wars one!) for the lyrics. He is an 83 year old man in my church who raises his hands and dances in worship! His love for Jesus shines through his words IMO. Thanks for your comment about my postings - the half term holiday is a wonderful thing! Ian

Alright Ian,

3 things:

1. This has a lovely settled quality to it that resonates just so with the image of a baby resting. I am not surprised that you had people interested in it.

2. It reminds me very much of Michael Joncas, the admirable American writer and performer. He did "On Eagle's Wings" and many more.

3. I think the harmony adds "mo" (momentum) at the end. I suspect that my music background is very different to your own, pop being more my thing. That being the case, I am probably not qualified to make suggestions but would you think of adding more harmonic voices at the end? A Beatlesque 3 would be agreeable.

God bless.

John Twomey

Hello John,
Thanks for posting. It's funny that you suggested adding the third harmony. I posted this song a long time ago and have added a third harmony at the end since then. I've attached the new version now.

Hey mate - the additional harmony is really lovely and again very "Chrismassy" (I know it's a crude and totally non-scriptural term but I'm sure you know what I mean). How's it going with this song? Did you guys do it at Christmas time? Nice one again mate.

Wayne

Yes we did it at Christmas and it went down well so will do it again this year. I also added it to an album of composers in our music groups which we've been selling in our church for a project our church are doing in Ghana. Made about £700 so far.....

Ah mate - that is awesome. Nice one
