Good songs for a small congregation?

It's for a CU at my secondary school, with an average of maybe 20 people.
At the moment we seem to use 'Strength will rise' and 'Blessed be your name' every other week, and not a lot else.
Looking essentially for songs that are easy to sing, with a small range, that can be led with one guitar

how great is our god???

That's good if you miss out the octave jump for 'Name above all names', will try

Here you go, here's my regular song bank. I've been through and fished out those that I don't think can be done easily with a solo worship leader, but everything else is do-able... and people can always sing more than they think! If it's too high, drop it down a tone or so, and that should work.

Have fun!

Hey thanks! That's a great list
The problems are there isn't a massive group, so people feel self concious singing high as they can hear themselves and everyone else can.
Also, people walk past the room all the time which makes people self concious too, not necessarily feeling able to worship freely in front of non Christian strangers, or just too embarrassed to sing.
But that list is excellent Joe, cheers!

I do see how they could be self-conscious. That is an extensive and impressive list though!

If you want to avoid songs that may be too high then I would be go easy on Hillsong's and also Chris Tomlin's stuff can be quite high. Tim Hughes, Matt Redman and Ben Cantelon are just a few I would recommend for good, easy to sing songs.

--Adele (yes, like the singer, only not as many throat issues)

I would suggest the song that was used at Soul Survivor this summer. You Never Give Up.
Also a good one in our small group, Beautiful One. And Hallelujah by Ben Centelon.

Hi there,

I find it depends a lot on whether you give out words to the people in the group, have words on a screen or just hope they know words. If you have access to and have the words on a screen, you're pretty much sorted (as long as you have someone who knows how to use the software!).

If you give out words, sometimes that can lead to people hiding behind them and lots of shuffling of sheets but it's still generally ok. If you don't have either (which is usually the case in small settings as you don't have access to a screen and don't want to print out at least 15 copies of every song), you have to make sure people know the songs or you can say the start of the next line before it comes in.

Even well known songs like 'Mighty to Save' or 'Salvation Belongs to Our God' can easily get mixed up if those singing don't know what the next line is. This can throw people out of worship when they're not confident about what's coming next. Lots of the songs mentioned above by Joe leave enough space to say or sing out a line before you come in. That way, people have confidence in what you're singing next. It's also helpful to those who are newer in the group who know or can guess the tune, but haven't had years of memorising the words! There are also the classics like Ben Cantelon's Hallelujah which are simple enough not to get too mixed up. As you rightly say, you just have to make sure you choose the right key or don't attempt an octave jump as the group will likely try and follow you in a smaller setting!

Ones that I've found work in this context:

Mighty to Save - Hillsong
How Great is Our God - Chris Tomlin
Hallelujah - Ben Cantelon
Gracious and Astounding (Stand in Awe) - Jeremy Riddle
Holy is the Lord - Chris Tomlin
Open the Eyes of My Heart - Michael W Smith
Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord - Dave Fellingham
Furious - Jeremy Riddle
Jesus, Be the Centre - Michael Frye
Our God - Matt Redman/Chris Tomlin
Jesus, Lover of My Soul - Paul Oakley
One Thing Remains (in E or lower!) - Brian Johnson
Faithful One - Brian Doerksen
Your Love Never Fails (again, put it down several tones!) - Chris McClarney

Hope this helps.

If you're one of those trendy worship leaders with an apple and a fringe you could give this a look http://www.isingworship.com/isingworship/Home.html - does all the backing for you but still gives you the flexibility to lead a song. It even displays the words!

It would be interesting to see what would happen if you give it to someone in the CU to lead worship from. I think you can even have the track with and with the vox, do drum breakdowns etc. Have a vocal on the track might help with the self concious singing.

There is a limited but decent selection of songs on there

Hi, we do have access to a screen for words so we're alright there, Hallelujah seems to have been suggested a lot!
I had a look at that ising thing, problem is it's quite expensive seeming as you have to pay per song and we're pretty happy just leading from a guitar sometimes with a djembe

Hey Richie thanks for that iSing link. I just downloaded it on my ipad and it's going to be brilliant for a small group (7 to 10 people) I'm involved in. We've been using CDs and a laptop for words but this is light years better than doing that. The break downs are so useful, the songs on there are a good choice for small groups but i can't wait for more. Very nice.
