Garage Band Guru? Logic Pro Professor?

I have been getting all the songs that have been buzzing around my head for the last 12 months down into GarageBand via Ipad. Its cheap and easy, OK it may not sound amazing, but at least my songs are not lost, I have a reference point to return to and refine. (I don't play guitar and am rubbish on the keys, so garage band helps me "cheat" to get tracks recorded)

However, I wondered if GB on the Mac is more fully featured than the ipad version, and if so, in what ways? Are there more "Smart" instruments and patterns? Are there more instruments at all (some nice rich pads for instance?)?

If there's not much of an uplift on GB on the Mac, what about Logic? I understand I could import all of my Garage Band projects into Logic and then we're talking about a proper DAW package, yes?

Anyone skilled in these arts please share your wisdom with me :)

Blessings,
Steven

I'm not a GB specialist, but there is certainly an upgrade in features, sounds and FX from Logic Express to Logic Pro. Ultrabeat and the EXS24 samplers are very very useful!

Never used GB on iPad, but can comment on GB vs Logic.

If all you're wanting to do is lay down 2-3 tracks, and you're not too worried about getting an absolutley perect mix, eq, effects etc. then Garageband will be fine.

If however you want to come out with something that sounds professional, Logic is they way forward (Ignoring cubase/ protools arguments). It's basically just bigger and better, more aand better quality sounds, more options for adding FX, better mastering, and loads of other stuff. It's basically like comparing notepad to MS Word; notepad works, but doesn't do any of the flashy stuff.

And yes, GB files will work fine on Logic.

thanks all for your replies.

Obviously, I'd need to justify the outlay of a Mac to run it on.

I'm still interested in the GB on Ipad vs GB on Mac comparison though? Anyone?

if you're looking for more palettes of sound, I would look at third party software instruments. There are many for Logic/Cubase/PTools, not sure about GB. Native Instruments are an especially good manufacturer of these. I have Absynth, and it's brilliant!

In addition I'm unable to edit the settings of those synths (sound generator "GarageBand Synths") as it doesn't give me any way to access the parameters. Neither through a click on the generator, nor via automation. How do I get to the parameters I can tweak on the iPad via the synth's knobs?
