Electric guitar: Explanations about what the worship central course says about it
3 replies

Hi,

I'm translating the Worship Central Course to French at the moment, and there's something I don't understand about what is said in the electric guitar paragraph.
For those who have the PDF, it's in session 6 (how to play together), page 14.
It's said:
"then something special that you reserve for taking it to ‘11’ in those Spinal Tap moments."

This is not a phrase I know, no dictionary is helping me and after asking around to check if somebody could help, I though I'd just come here where you would possibly know better what this means. Is it some technical things about the guitar?
Thanks a lot for your help.

Almost done translating, I'm excited to start it soon!

Hi Jean-Baptiste

It's a British cultural reference - there was a movie made a while ago called "Spinal Tap" which was a comic documentary about a rock band, and in one scene, the guitarist said he had modified his amplifier so that the dials "went to 11".

To explain this... most dials only reach 10, so it was a bit of a joke to say that it "went to 11", but the approximate idea is that by 'taking it to 11', you are boosting the guitar sound you have so that it is either (a) louder, or (b) more overdriven.

Hope this helps.

PS. nous sommes confus aussi quand les français indiquent, "quand les poulets ont des dents"... :)

Hi Joe,

Thanks a lot for this explanation, it was of great help! I wouldn't have figured it out, I never thought that could be a reference to a movie. This makes sense now, I'm done with this chapter. Only one left! Yes! =D
Yes, you're right, it's the kind of phrase that's not easy to understand without explanations, these sentences make it interesting to try to understand each others sometimes :) Well, I'm glad, because of this, we can learn things everyday!
