Anyone got any good advice on writing congregational songs? Just thought it might be good for us to share some nuggets that have been passed on to us regarding songwriting for congregational worship - let's really use this forum to invest and sharpen each other. This Nugget was passed on to me from Pete James, Here is what it looks like practically lets take "beautiful one" for example Verse 1 Verse 2 Might be me being the ultimate noob but this revolutionised my song writing and you will see that most of my songs (maybe all in fact) now follow that pattern! So any more nuggets out there...... |

Noob!
:D
Anyway when are we going to see one of your masterpieces up on the forum..... :P ;)
back to topic....
I love the Chris/Sim banter!
erm my nugget would be a strage one from Mr Andy Flannagan.
Don't be afraid of using "non-worship" language. using everyday words can really help people connect. It may not seem relevent to put the word rubbish in an "adults" worship song, but it can stop us from getting caught up in biblical cliches!
And we haven't seen any of Sims masterpieces up on the forum because they are masterpieces....surely that means there would be no improvements to be made!
Hey mate - yeah that's a good one! I met up the other with an absolute legend from our church who has pioneered the musical worship for 25 years and he was like why dont we hear songs that are current to what's going on and told me to get writing about the credit crunch! - I told him i couldn't afford to spend time on it..... TAXI!
And Niall...... He wishes... ;)
generally simple songs are the ones that last and that people relate to the most.
thats something ive been trying to do more of making my songs less complex.
also be original and be yourself dont try and copy anyone else.
God bless,
gav.
Ha credit crunch worship.......
When the market starts to falter
when my shares fall lord are you there
but there's one thing that i'll cling to
gordon brown yes you are a fool
The credit crunch is leaving me penniless
inflation has left my mortgage unpaid
and now i cant purchase a loaf of breeaadd
Recession, Recession
when my shares fall still I will sing to you
Inflation, Inflation
when the interest is much to high for me
sorry, felt i should answer the credit crunch call........
and what it this TAXI business? is it.......i've made a terrible joke.....TAXI!
is it a throw back to goodness gracious me...when he would do something then go....cheque please?
Another nugget from the great Andy Flan......and to validate my long unnecessary post:
Don't listen to Christian music. May sound crazy, but the more you listen to all the latest Christian stuff and neglect other music, you will fall into the trap of writing the same old clichés over and over!
Building on something someone posted about secular music connecting better than christian stuff, i think we as songwriters maybe need to worry less about singing about the more nitty gritty subjects of christianity and write what is actually on peoples hearts.
I know that I have fallen into this trap too and it's a hard one but one i reckon is worth following up.
HAHA Niall, me and Sim and here loving the song!! I think it's a hit, lots of potential..... ;)
Well seeing as you're down with Tim Hughes.......how about you email him, we get some copyright allowances then when I come up to Leeds we can workshop it, get Mark to record it and release it on your Emerge album :P
I love what Brian Doerkson says - “The most enduring songs are virtually without exception the simple ones.” I've been trying to return to simple, memorable melodies with lyrics that engage the mind and heart. They are definitely the hardest to write. Simple doesn't mean dull and boring. I think the best songs have a simplicity to them. A melody that's exciting and singable.
Sometimes I've tried to be too clever with a song and when I've come to lead it the congregation just can't pick it up. Mike Pilavachi uses the phrase KISS - 'Keep it simple stupid!'
