This is a very rough (actual bedroom demo) recording of a song I wrote in April during a time of quiet worship and for a change I got the whole song at once. Since then I have been using it to focus on God during my quiet times. I am not sure whether it is appropriate for a congregational song as it is quite personal, and I am not sure about the ad-libbing tag. I would appreciate any comments about it you have- so over to you.
Thanks for listening and reading,
Nick
Lyrics:
Too often I find myself taking over,
too often I make it all about me.
Too often I lose all sense of wonder,
too often I forget about your glory.
Help me come back to You,
for this is all about You.
I want to be part of your big story,
I want to serve to lift your name.
I give my life to your big story,
for this is all about your fame.
Make it less of me and more of You.
I'm sorry Lord that I am so selfish,
I am not worthy to see your face.
I am a sinner, but I am not helpless,
as I am saved by your amzing grace.
Help me come back to You,
for this is all about You.
I want to be part of your big story,
I want to serve to lift your name.
I give my life to your big story,
for this is all about your fame.
Make it less of me and more of You.

I love it - I was singing along with some harmonies in my office just now... :)
May you be blessed as God continues to annoint you to write music for Him.
Hi Nick, cheers for posting such an honest song of confession, it's good to see your heart searching after God as number one. To be honest, I'd say that this should stay as a personal song just for you, because it's probably assuming too much to imagine that every member of a typical congregation would be in exactly the same place of needing to confess exactly the same things as you've got in this song. (though to be fair, that was apparently exactly what Matt Redman thought when he wrote 'Heart of Worship' i.e. that it would never be used by anyone other than him, but obviously history has proved otherwise :)
I think with this song though you're slightly in danger of still making it all about 'me', even though it's a song all about how you *don't* want it to be all about 'me'! I say that because for the first three lines of the chorus are 'I want... I want... I give...' where the focus is still on what I'm doing for God. It'd be a completely different song if you had a chorus like:
You are the one who is writing the story
You are the author of history
You are the playwright, inviting me in
To walk with you, to play my part, to be your hands, to know your heart
or whatever - that's a pretty rubbish idea, but you see the difference? The focus is much more on God rather than what I'm doing for him. If you're keeping this as a personal song, don't bother changing it, but if you going more congregational that's the direction I'd suggest.
God bless,
Matt

Wow- thanks for your comments- a chorus re-write might be in order and I can see where you are coming from Matt, even though the context of the song is to focus on God there are still a lot of I's..
Helen I would love to hear some of those harmonies you were singing- I don't really have an ear for harmonies.
It iis very encouraging to have the song compared to Heart of Worship at this early stage, please feel free to continue to comment on the song- constructive criticism is always welcome.
