Hi all
I'm new here so I hope I'm doing this right..??
I 've been involved with kids ministry at church for just over a year now, writing songs and making videos which have proved useful. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_54CULqfFT4) I'm really keen to get a bunch of songs together that are useful for both young and old(er) folk, and simple enough to learn quickly. Also, they need to be accessible to folk with limited bible knowledge. Our ministry at the moment is really trying to reach out to families on our estate who's kids come to our club but don't really know much about Jesus or 'church'. I'm hoping that we can do part of this through the songs we give to the kids.
Please fnd attached my first attempt for this project. Any feedback welcome.
Cheers
John Zealey
Everything That Is Good
---------------------------------
You are an awesome God.
You use the most amazing
ways, and places, to reveal Your hand.
You are an awesome God.
You use the most unlikely
People, who may not yet understand.
Everything that is good,
I claim it all back for You.
I claim it all back for You, Jesus.
I claim it all back for You.
You are an awesome God.
You choose the most surprising
ways, and places, to reveal Your hand.
You are an awesome God.
You use the most unlikely
People, who may not yet understand.
Everything that is good,
I claim it all back for You.
I claim it all back for You, Jesus.
I claim it all back for You.
Everything that is good.
Everything that is pure.
Everything that is true.
I claim it all back for You.
Anything that is Yours.
Anything that is true.
I claim it all back for You.

Hi John,
I like what you're trying to do here. Family friendly songs are not easy to get right. Like you say, they need to be easy to pick up and to understand.
I think you've got a good feel to the song and it is easy to pick up. My one problem with it is that you said you are trying to reach out to unchurched people and I'm not sure that I would understand some of it if I were unchurched.
I think someone with limited Bible knowledge might struggle to understand the line, "You use the most unlikely people, who may not yet understand."
There also seems to be some quite "churchy" language as well. You talk about claiming everything that is good back for God and God revealing his hand. I don't think that this sort of language is really used outside of church, although I may be wrong. You know the people you're trying to reach better than I do.
Overall, I think it's really good first post and you've done a great job with the recording.
Keep it up.

Hi Ste
Thanks for your reply, that was useful feedback. I hear what you are saying about the language.

Hey John, like Ste I like the feel of this, and writing "multi-generational" songs is really important. Respect for taking it on, it's not easy!
I'd have some concerns about how easy it would be to pick the melody. I like the verse melody line, but there are some unusual changes in pitch (the chromatic steps) and rhythm (the gap at the end of the second line) that might be tricky for people to follow - although those elements certainly make the song musically more interesting.
Lyrically I'd agree with Ste. Also lyrically it's quite conceptual. There aren't any concrete examples of what is good that could be redeemed for Jesus. For an all-age song I think that would probably be needed for younger children to be able to relate to the song.
The chorus melody is really good - simple and catchy. Well worth hanging on to! And the arrangement and recording are both really strong.
