I have been asked to speak at my church about worship in the 21st century. After overcoming my initial shock of the enormity of the challenge set before me I decided to start planning. The main things I would like to address: What are the aims of worship I have a some ideas for analogies, jokes and anecdotes, but I wondered if you have any ideas that I might be able to use; are there any books you have read, or podcasts listened to about the subject that would help? Are there any other key points you think I should address? I would also be interested to hear your ideas about any of the points listed or answers and conclusions that you have come to about worship in the 21st century. The talk isn't until the start of February (I am trying to be organised) but if you are reading this in March (or later) then please still contribute as I am interested to hear your views on the subject anyway. Thanks, Nick |

Man Nick, seems like you're pretty much going to be mapping out how to live a successful Christian life! Huge topic, impossibly huge! uhh... For me, I'd start with our view of God: 1. is it fresh 2. is it accurate 3. is it personal to the individual. If we find God we are compelled to worship in our own way. Really, worship isn't a "thing" it is a result. Like if I threw a ball through a window, the result of the broken window isn't the action or the "thing", it is the result. I think it is similarly our worship isn't an "action" it is a "result" of pursuing God. So maybe it would be easier look at how to pursue God in the 21st century? Dunno... but if it doesn't start with our view of God it will get all snagged up in the wrong motives.
So, I just gave a handful of sentences to just point from one huge topic to another! :)
That is a really good point Marc- thanks. Once you connect with God is on a personal level then you can truly worship with your whole being- so that has to be the starting point and then everything else should flow from that- that is so important.
I think I would like to talk about keeping it real and staying fresh like you said without it turning into a fast-food style quick fix worship.
Several huge topics and a whole series if not several series of talks can be written about this!
