Words are important. My little girl Phoebe is learning to talk. Currently her favourite word is 'booby.' (I blame her mother!) We've had much embarrassment with her pointing to people and shouting as loud as she can 'booby.' When it comes to worship words are important. Finding expression to all the emotions within is vital. As worship leaders how are choosing and finding songs that give voice to the depths of peoples feelings? How are we allowing people to communicate with God in a way that goes beyond the familiar and predictable? If we get stuck saying the same words time and again there's a danger of them losing a sense of power and meaning. Obviously liturgy and repetition is a wonderful gift to the church in worship, especially in the way it can form our thinking and shape our understanding of God. There's something inspiring about repeating words, prayers and hymns that are centuries old. But where are we stretching the limits to enable not only ourselves but also the church to move into a fresh expression of worship? I've been struck by something Athanasius, one of the early church fathers, said, “The word of God speaks to us, the Psalms speak for us.” If you look through the Psalms there is such a richness of emotion expressed. It's honest, raw, shocking, exciting, profound, moving, gut wrenching and worshipful. They are such a great form of inspiration to us today, and are indeed a collection of poems, prayers and songs that can fill our mouths with words that enable us to worship a glorious King. If you feel your worship has become safe and dull then perhaps dig into the Psalms and begin speaking them out - sing them - pray them. Not only will it stretch and enlarge our view and comprehension of God, it will release greater creativity and depth to our worship. Words are important!

nice blog post. Very challenging for us Worship Leaders / Songwriters, so that we don't just "conform to the norm" all the time. Tom Cross

The Psalms are great and as worship leaders we should always be meditating and reflecting on the Psalms. I always try to accompany my daily devotions with a few Psalms. From a worship leader's point of view, it keeps me sharp and on task as to why I do what I do. Happy B-Day Tim!!!
Hi Tim, that was a great blog. Nice to hear about Phoebe Joy as well. One of my friends told me that her son called his blanket "booby" and when they were trying to leave the zoo one day he was having a meltdown and kept screaming at the top of his lungs, " I want my booby, I want my booby"! Hope you are well, I will be in London in August. See you then. Say hi to Rachel. Happy Birthday, Tim!
Just wanted to leave you a message to say thank you for your seminars and worship at Clan Gathering this week. My family and I had a fantastic week. Look forward to seeing you in Dumfermline in October God Bless xx
Thank you Tim
Words are powerful. The Psalms are a great example of their beauty. Words can really inspire. They can move you, and when you are moved words articulate your emotion and understanding. Combined with music, communication is beyond cerebral. It is exalted. You are communicating with your spirit. This is the heart of worship. I love the words of the sermon, and I also love the worship preceding the message. Anxieties and frustrations that weigh me down quickly recede as my heart and mind begin to worship through the ministry of song. Repetition of the refrain helps a lot when burdens are heavy. My spirit is refreshed, and I am much more receptive to the words of the message. I am thirsty for it. Worship leaders have a great responsibility. Leading the congregation to the Spirit and creating an atmosphere of harmony with the Spirit is a great responsibility and a great gift. When I am particularly run down, it is a great blessing to just be still and let it flow over me - to be in the presence of it. Words and music have always been my passion. Words are frequently underestimated, even by the most educated people. There is so much more to words than we realise. 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God' (John 1:1)
I was reading in my copy of "the heart of worship files" about the idea of presenting the truths such as that of the cross in new ways and was wondering, How exactly can we as worship leaders do this without sounding cliched and coming up with phrases that have been used many times before?
i might also suggest reading the other sections of the bible least read such as the Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Micah, Hosea, Amos and the other minor prophets.... its good insightful read for what worship is truly about...!
