Sir Alex Ferguson is arguably one of footballs greatest managers, winning more trophies than any other manager in the history of the English game with Manchester United. On a plane out to the States, I was reading an interview with Ferguson where he was asked about the 3 most important qualities of a leader. He responded saying the 3 keys were... 1. Control 2. Managing change 3. Observation I was really interested in these. There's lots to learn here. 1. Control - how are we leading, inspiring and developing our teams? Are we clear in the way we lead, in the authority entrusted to us? Team dynamics can go horribly wrong when there is no clear leadership. 2. Managing change - how do we keep growing teams, raising up leaders, pushing on in to new things? Any leader that settles is in real trouble. To keep at the top of your game you need to manage change and allow new ideas to flourish. 3. Observation - attention to detail is so vital. Keeping a close watch on what's going on all around, listening closely to what others are saying and acting wisely on it is always essential to great leadership. There are no short cuts here - leadership involves hard work and a constant watch on all that's going on. Anyway some food for thought. Would love to know what others think. Agree? Disagree?

i think ferguson also has a really thick skin which has helped him over the years. he also commands respect from everyone and can make brave decisions and drop players whos egos were too big for the good of the team (not sure how that last one applies to worship teams tho!) interesting stuff, cheers tim!
I don't like the word control. Release is a much better word. Yes, we need to provide clear leadership and vision but releasing people within that vision as much as possible!
I agree that Alex Ferguson is the greatest all time football manager (coming from a united fan), and I also agree with his 3 points. I think control over the worship team is key as many people can let their ego go way to high, and I think it's key to challenge each other in this area. Cool stuff Tim. Its great to see how worshippers can even learn from things of the world. Even though they can take people's attentions of seeking God we can still find good learning points from them.
The missing ingredient from Sir Alex's list is vision. A leader needs to have an understanding of where his team is at and where he wants the team to get to. It's relatively easy to define your aims as a top football manager - you aim to win the league/cup. It's harder to define goals as a worship leader. It's all very well controling/releasing your team and managing change well, but you have to lead them in the right direction! Where are you leading your team in season 09/10?

I think we have to be careful with the control one, because although we want one person to look to to discern the way if you like, we don't want to be so controlling that we can 1. Miss what God is actually wanting to do/is doing because we march on with OUR plan 2. Hamper the creativity of the other gifted folks in the band. That said, I do totally know what you mean about how it can fall apart and feel very discouraging and stressful if there's no clear leadership. Sir Alex has three good points, but that's not enough. You've got to have talent. If you don't have talent, these three qualities only make you a despot - not a leader. If you want to wrest control and maintain it, then these three principals will serve you well. But if you want to lead, you need talent, and that's only from God. I would say these are great management axioms, but that's as far as I would take it. Leadership is so much more than being a good manager.
