Missing Masterpiece

Missing Masterpiece

10 Jul 2008
On 21 August 1911, Leonardo da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa' painting was stolen from the Louvre in France. The Louvre was immediately closed down for an entire week as a mass operation swung into action to hunt down the missing masterpiece. When the museum was finally reopened, thousands of people queued up to see the blank wall space, where the Mona Lisa once hung. It seems crazy that so many people would pay to essentially see nothing. I guess this can be like our church services without the Holy Spirit. We get caught up with the external things - the songs, the sound, the lighting, how the band look, how people are responding. The danger is we judge a successful time of worship by how great the band played and how intense the experience was. All of this can happen without the Holy Spirit. A. W. Tozer once laid down the challenge, “If God took His Holy Spirit out of this world, what the church is doing would go right on and nobody would know the difference.” We mustn't let that happen. Worship without the Holy Spirit is like turning up to the Louvre to see an empty space where the Mona Lisa was once displayed for all to see. It's a challenge to remember that we must keep getting desperate to see God's Spirit at work. To be surrendered to His lead and obedient to His call. To be passionate in prayer and willing to take risks. Only then will we see true breakthrough in the worshipping life of our churches.

So true! I remember a few months ago I came home from a great night of worship at St Pauls where the spirit was most obviously present and things were happening. So when I got home I said to my housemate (who also went), "Didn't you find that service amazing?". She said she hated it, I was quite taken aback. Apparently she doesn't like the Holy Spirit. So I tried to explain all this stuff, but she was still fearful. Which is some respects if partially understandable if you have never seen that type of thing happen before. However it did get me thinking. How we can seemingly go to services and be content with not experiencing anything of God or the spirit, and that if He does turn up we can complain he ruined 'our' service?! We need to be constantly pressing into God's presence and not settling for anything less! For a church without the spirit is dead.

I love that Tozer quote. It reminds me of something Bono says in 'Conversations with Bono'. I've been looking for it, but I can can't find it. (The passage, not the book. I found the book down the back of my sofa.)
Very helpful comment Al. What else did you find down the back of your sofa? Tim

Great post - We need to be careful that "Worship" doesn't just become this empty place indeed. Rowan Williams - Why Study the Past - A Quest for the Historical Church; writes of tradition - "What we are attending to is the record of encounter with God in Christ." Lets not attend to a record of encounter - let's attend a living encounter. // www.danbladen.com // www.sph.org // www.bigfamilyofgod.com //

Let's attend to the record as well - we see so far because we stand on the shoulders of giants but, if we are ignorant of our history, we are doomed to repeating the same mistakes.

Saturday was brilliant, the spirit really moving and annointing. It was so good to not just have 'space for the spirit' but the whole day open to Him moving in which ever way He chose. I think that really needs to be reflected in our lives, not just for 20 minutes on a Sunday morning. I agree with Jords' comment that sometimes we find ourselves complaining about what the Spirit did in a service as He "ruined" it by taking us out of our comfort zone. How strange and silly is that? We're there to meet with and praise God and when His Spirit does move we want to stop it! At least Al knows where most of his stuff is, I suppose! Interesting book shelf though! Daniel
the longer i lead worship, the more i realize how much more i need to learn. i'm reading 'knowledge of the holy' by tozer right now and he sets some really great challenges for us as christ followers. thanks for the reminder to "keep the main thing, the main thing." www.jeramysossaman.com

When I read this blog immediately what came to mind was the song "Heart Of Worship". What does God required of us in worship is he question. What sort of enviroment does God inhabit? What makes God inhabit the praises of His people? Meditate on this beloved.
