Let Me Entertain You?

Let Me Entertain You?

24 Sep 2009

"The church that can't worship must be entertained. And men who can't lead a church to worship must provide the entertainment."  A.W. Tozer.

This is quite a challenge - especially as we all prepare to lead worship this Sunday. Are we going to pull out the classics, and try and force people into a time of worship? Are we going to rely on our own strength to make something happen? Or, are we going trust and follow God to lead us in a beautiful, deep and meaningful encounter of worship.

John 6:63

"The Spirit brings life; the flesh counts for nothing."

Perhaps the best thing we could do in terms of our preparation for leading worship is to spend some time in God's presence, seeking Him and asking that He may fill us up with the Holy Spirit and use us in power to bring glory to Him.

Let's go for it. Who wants shallow entertainment when we can give people Jesus!

Hahahaha... "pull out the classics"... I must admit to being guilty of that from time to time - especially when my week has been tough and inspiration is low. Maybe that's when I should be putting more "perspiration" into my preparation... I want to be more than an entertainer! What does the church want from me as a leader, though? 8 )
Amen brother : ) We should repent for trying to give people anything other than Jesus...
I was going to "pull out the classics" this week... Starting with "Happy Day" followed by "Light of the World" then a quick swing into "Dance Dance, Everybody dance"... Think I'll change my list now though! ;-)

Just to be clear: I assume it's the "forcing people into a time of worship" that's wrong, not the pulling out of "the classics"? Nowt wrong with the classics!

It's fantastic to sing the classics! Alex your set list looked great (joke...) I mean more just relying on the big songs rather than asking God what He wants. Leaning on God's guidance rather than simply our own understanding.

Spending time in His presence beforehand is definitely the best prep I can think of. It's a lot easier to lead people somewhere you've already recently been!! Great stuff!!

I am very impressed at these blogs, and am an avid reader of them! I believe its important that we find out 'What season' our individual church is in then ask God to give us inspirational songs that would enhance that season, thereby bringing encouragement, exhortation, challenge, direction etc..i'll stop now!
This is inline with something which has been on my haert recently..I'm in a church which is very traditional...and although the "classics" maybe different (15 years older) the situation is the same. My phrase of the moment is "Facilitate Worship...don't facilitate Nostalgia"

sometimes it's not as easy as it seems guys. some people in church just don't engage in worship. I'm a young minister but I use to play in my church, and sometimes a family seats in the first chair and then starts to eat popcorn in the middle of a deep worship moment, while they were eating we could see other people in church worshiping God and ecountering Him, but that family just did not want to.. I donno. I'm just trying to say that we are not going to lead everyone to worship, sometimes, it's a people's choice too. What we can do is to give our best to Him and wait for his Spirit to do His job in people's life. If some people just don't start to worship while we are playing, it's not always our fault.
WHAT IS ALL THE FUSS ABOUT !!! ??? !!!!! So what if people also find it "entertainment" , God sure does ,That is what he made music for and it is a sharing experience with him . Come ON !!! , If you go to a "worldly" concert you join with that spirit for a bit of "jollys" and sometimes that feels great too but it doesn't mean that you had a sharing experience with God , NO , THAT is purely entertainment and we don't get to share that GLORY only the person on the stage gets the attention !!! So , come on , LIGHTEN UP and stop debating what true worship is !!! Too much worrying about nothing . Be grateful we can sing/dance and make music at all and share the passion of entertaining GOD together . Little Children do not worry who see's them "DO" , let that burden pass away , the WORSHIP will be so much purer for doing so . If people have made the effort to gather together why feel guilty about being happy ? That Should mean more in CHURCH than debating the heart of the worship team/ leaders !!
