Lead Me On

Lead Me On

8 Dec 2009

"You can't be a social activist without being a contemplative." These words of the author Jim Wallis (God's Politics) really struck me recently. It re-affirms this idea that worship and justice cannot be separated - they are two sides of the same coin. In loving the poor, the weak and abused we are in fact loving Jesus.

In spending time contemplating the beauty, wonder, faithfulness and might of God we are inspired to love as He loves, to be full of compassion in the way He is.

When we look at the world, marred by pain and brokenness, a world in which people murder, rape and destroy, we can lose any sense of hope. The Nazi camp survivor, Corrie Ten Boom, who was exposed to the most horrific injustices once said, "If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed. If you look at God you'll be at rest." In worship our perspective changes. Our minds are renewed, our souls are refreshed and our hearts begin to believe again. It's in the presence of God that we are empowered to be a people that make a difference.

The great Martin Luther King, leader of the civil rights movement was at the forefront leading the justice struggle. But do you know his favourite song? A song called 'Precious Lord' by Thomas A. Dorsey. (As a side note this was written after Dorsey's wife tragically died during childbirth along with his new born son. In the midst of such heartbreak he turns to God and pens this beautiful song of adoration and trust.)

Precious Lord, take my hand.

Lead me on, let me stand.

I am tired, I am weak, I am worn.

Through the storm, through the night

Lead me on to the light

Take my hand precious Lord, lead me on.

I would have pictured him singing songs that roused faith and fight - 'Onward Christian Soldiers' or 'We are marching in the light of God.' But no, it was a simple song of trust and surrender, a song of intimacy. Martin Luther King no doubt was inspired time and again in Christ's presence.

I'm desperate to grow in love, compassion and thoughtfulness towards others. I don't want to end up selfish and secure - safe in my kingdom of comfort. I want to serve God and serve those in need all around, whatever the cost. My hope is that as I spend more time seeking God, He will give me all I need to step out of my comfortable existence - to take a risk. There is great power in intimacy!

awesome to read this tim! glad this is on your heart... I think its why its so important to push into the character of God-the attributes of Himself He has given us, God of Justice for example. Because when we focus our eyes on Him and push into intimacy with Him, He will lead us along a path of those things which are of Himself! awesome... I echo your hope!
great post Tim. Thank you.

Awesome. Thanks for sharing! It's so easy to be disheartened when you read the news or watch the telly....With all the bad things going on - war, death, violence, disasters, loneliness - Jesus Christ is the true hope for this world. We need to reveal our Hope, Christ, to those we meet. We need to be active, no more waiting for others to be part of the great commission.
My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name.
I walk past hundreds of poor people every day! Often I have to go back coz I think what if that was him ? J ? Intense... yet true.. I was happy to be among a crowd at Laura Marling and Mumford and sons in Pune and Mumbai this last week... Rocking to have some good music in my current home town.. and it was beautiful (mumbai gig) .. palm trees blowing in the wind by the sea and wonderful music ...what a treat and I was thoroughly enjoying it all until Laura sung a new song? Its a killer! It's about "forgetting what you made" or something like that.. the lyrics I can't remember.. about a mother leaving her baby to grow up by itself in the woods and how that grown up child helps another one have a better chance later in life... well i was undone.. I have seen so many babies neglected, abused and starved and sold... Laura's song is beautiful.... talented girl she is.... and I'm glad she sings laments and is not scared of touching pain...we live in a painful world and it's good to cry sometimes! I am thankful I had a lovely pregnant friend next to me who treasures her unborn baby... and gave me a sweet hug ..I am her midwife and she is a lovely friend....
beautiful. The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light do we see light. Psalm 36: 7-9 lead us on, Lord!
