Laughter is the best medicine

Laughter is the best medicine

12 Jan 2010

"If you're not having fun, you need to back up and find out where you left Jesus." I love this quote from Bill Johnson. Serving Jesus should be the most fun and exciting thing we ever do. That doesn't mean it will always be easy, in fact at times there will be great challenges and trials. But in the midst of all this there should always be joy and fun - 'sorrowful yet always rejoicing.'

When leading worship with our teams let's think about how we can make it fun. One of our values at Worship Central is to enjoy ourselves. I hope that after every team night, every rehearsal, every time we lead worship that the team come away having had a lot of laughs and great conversations. A sign of life with always be joy. Please let's avoid taking ourselves too seriously. Richard Foster in his book 'Celebration of Discipline' writes, “It is an occupational hazard of devout folk to become stuffy bores.” Let's buck the trend.

This also begs the question, personally where are we replenished? Where do we find ourselves laughing lots? Wherever it is and whatever it is doing, may I encourage you to spend more time doing these things. I have found these places of fun and enjoyment bring great life and energy for the task and vision at hand.

"A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones." Proverbs 22:17

Would love to know what you guys do to keep life fun for your worship teams...

Love what Sandy Millar often says, "Intensity is not actually one of the Fruit of the Spirit." Makes me chuckle everytime.
Great photo by the way... did you spend a lot of time googling that one up?
It's a shot of you at Worship Central California. You were laughing so hard!

I'm not actually in a worship team, but I would love to become involved in the worship at my youth group. The one thing that I love about worship at events (ie the Worship Central tour: London) and at church, is when we do celebration songs and we can all just jump up and down, and enjoy the time of worship. Me and my friends just feel free to be ourselves and be teenagers! Thanks for posting Tim!
Some things we do to keep our rehearsals fun: We laugh at ourselves when we hit wrong notes, during rehearsal we go off into fun musical interludes that have nothing to do with the songs we're supposed to be rehearsing (e.g., taking some chords from Here I Am To Worship and turning them into a heavy metal head banging tune), and I try to let conversation flow during rehearsal by not being uptight about sticking to a schedule! I totally agree with you Tim, that not taking ourselves too seriously is SO important, especially for musicians. It helps us appreciate others more, not think too highly of ourselves, and make room for others to come forth. Thanks for the reminder!

I'm generally the only girl in a team that play for a monthly youth event the YFC team in our town run. The lads have a great laugh out of doing things such as bundling me up in a keyboard case and wheeling me round the room. I'm glad we all have the kind of relationship where I know they love me really however much they like to tease me just because I'm the only girl!

That picture sure made me chuckle.
... let all the world know that Jesus saves!
Cheers, had a pretty rubbish day but this has reminded me to think of the positives and the people who make my life what it is. Sometimes in rehursals we like to try and play a song with eveyone lying down. Even the drummer - which is pretty impressive drumming skills! It's fun, and can also be quite relaxing when things get a bit much.
sometimes yo have to laugh! I am on take 15??? of trying to download the unplugged album! Every time it gets almost finished the internet randomly drops me off line.. .the joys of living in asia! ...means rubbish internet! we have a lot of laughs coz we have to live life in multi cultural languages... I once said"Does anyone want to stand on a cat?" in cantonese when i meant to say "Deos anyone want to ride a horse? " Then recently I said in hindi " Do you drink urine?" instead of do you drink alcohol? It was a health survey not a worship practice... but it was hysterical :) We thought so anyway .. on both accounts..
