DEVOTE YOURSELF

DEVOTE YOURSELF

3 Nov 2009

I'm not sure about you, but I've always had a secret desire to be classified as a 'genius.' Well scientists claim they have now discovered what it takes for someone to reach the top of their chosen discipline and receive this accolade; a mere 10,000 hours of practice.

Studies suggest that top sportsmen and women, musicians and chess players have all put in this amount of graft.  Think of Beckham’s endless free kick drills.  Tiger Woods continuous hours on a golf course.

In Malcolm Gladwell's book, ‘Outliers: The Story of Success’ he describes practice as being the key to The Beatles' success.  In their early career the Fab Four would play eight hours a night, seven days a week while in Hamburg.  By the time they hit it big, they had performed live an estimated 1,200 times -more than most modern bands play in their careers.

Think of Michelangelo – years crafting and developing his masterpiece – the Sistine Chapel. His autobiography – ‘The Agony and the Ecstasy’ perfectly captures the pain and pleasure involved in releasing great art.

Let’s be honest, time in our lives today is in short supply. We are all busy. Many have busy jobs. Families. Responsibilities.  But I believe if we want to be the best at what we do. If we want to see amazing art that impacts and inspires others we need to devote ourselves to it.

We need to give it time.

I was chatting to Reuben Morgan (Hillsong - Mighty to Save, This is our God, Lord I give you my heart). In conversation, in passing, he mentioned that he devoted his best 3 hours most days to song writing. Hearing this, it comes as no surprise, that in my opinion Reuben is currently writing some of the best songs for the Church to sing worldwide.

The French novelist Emilé Zola writes, “the artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing with the work”.  This all begs the question, how are we devoting ourselves to release creativity?  How many hours are we honing our skills of music and singing? How many hours are we pouring through lyrics, trying to find the right phrase? How much are we thinking about ways we can grow and improve? These are challenging questions!

I'd be interested to hear how people carve out creative time in the midst of busy jobs.  Let me know...

Hi Tim, I can't say I am very good at doing this, and having a child and a job it gets difficult, so I try and fit it in when I get time out from the norm, and I found I think and reflect really well when I'm travelling on trains. I walk to work so for me I will use trains at the weekend when it's quieter so probably won't work on a normal day during rush hour. Also I am trying to be a poet which is obviously something that is easier to do anywhere, taking a guitar and getting it out in public will be a bit more difficult. As I have said in another post, thankyou to yourself and the team for the tour, I really enjoyed the London night and came away with alot of encouragement, to get more involved in the worship team at my church. Also another thanks to you and Al for allowing me to take your photo, it's typical that my camera on my phone had packed up. GodBless SBG
good thoughts as always tim, its hard to find time in our busy lives. one way is to maximise the time we have available and not waste it. also with songwriting, to relax and not force out creativity. its a hard balancing act! God bless, gav.
Spot on Tim. I for one find it very hard to make that time but one thing is for sure. Every time spent in preparation is worth it and the more you prepare the better. I have a very busy Job, a family, School and I have to lead worship. One thing I have learnt is that just as there is designated time for work. Some time has to be desiganted for preparation and practice in ministry and art delivery. Such time should not be restricted anyway. I know an organist who always practices at 11hrs on Saturday for about an hour in church. Much as he is a proficient player and has been for many years, he always practices and prepares even for things that he can play with ease. Show me a succesful artist talented or not and I will show you a person who has spent long hours of preparation and practice. Remember the parable of the talents. God bless

hi tim, since the age of 5yrs old worship has been vital in my relationship with our awesome heavenly Father. I have cds on constantly with worship (i drive my kids mad) especially with songs I am currently teaching the worship team, and soaking myself in for strength. All of us live busy lives but to give excellence to such a worthy saviour it takes time, as a singer its slightly easier but it still consuming but hey its all practice for the greatest worship that is reserved for us in the heavens throne room, where I for one will be singing my heart out. x keep going strong and sold out for Jesus God bless Lisa
Hey Tim, For me being at school takes away most of my day, get home do homework then chill and go to bed. I play 3 instruments and a few more... and never have time to fit in stuff like practicing anywhere near as much as i'd like, also my creative time is very random and usually at 1 or 2 am. I think I've made the decision to wake up at 5.45am and getting in some prayer and 3 slots of 20mins for my instruments. I have no idea how I plan to stay up for the rest of the day. But this could work for other people! Loved the London night, Defiantly inspired me to start taking my gift seriously. God bless, Matt

Great post! This is something i'm trying to tackle. I am finding it hard trying to fit everything in with working full time, but trying to maximise the time i do have to practice, song-write, worship, have quite times etc. I found getting up early and spending time with God right at the beginning of each day helps maximise my time during the day, and also sets me up to go out and be a follower of Jesus. Cheers for posting Tim.

Thanks for the post Tim. Should Emilé Zola's quote not say, “the artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing WITHOUT the work”?
Hi all, I get up at 6am when my husbands gets up for work and have my quiet time then i find waking to hear Gods words first thing for the day puts my whole day in his hands also by keeping a journel its amazing to read the journey God has taken you on and thank him for his continual everlasting kindness x Lisa
