Adoration

Adoration

23 Dec 2008

I love the painting of Gentile Da Fabriano entitled 'Adoration of the Magi.' It captures the beautiful scene of the Magi's first glimpse of the baby Jesus - Almighty God contracted to a span. I encourage you to spend some time looking at the painting. For me the part I find so moving is the one Magi who puts down his gift and just kneels - lost in wonder before Jesus. Whilst the others hold onto their gifts this man, overwhelmed and captivated by the beauty of Jesus, bows down and simply beholds. As I approach 2009 I feel this challenge within to be more like this Magi. He seems to have got it right. So often I'm caught up in what I can bring. The things I can do. "Lord I'll give more of my money to serve Your Church. Lord I'll give more of my time to lead your people in worship. I'll attend more prayer meetings. I'll read the bible more." All of these are amazing and worthy things - they can be wonderful gifts. But they can be offered up out of duty - rather than adoration. They can be accomplished without intimacy. The hymn writer Christina Rossetti puts it perfectly in her hymn, 'In the bleak mid winter.' 'What can I give Him Poor as I am If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb If I were a wise man I would do my part Yet what I can I give Him Give my heart The desire in God's heart is that we bring our hearts, our lives, our all. At this time, as worshippers of the most glorious King, let's not hide behind bringing our gifts - the stuff we do. Rather let's give all that we are and let's embrace and behold Emmanuel, God with us. Let's make this a year of simple adoration. I love how they seem to all be removing there crowns! The first one has his off and is already one the ground before the King. The second one is reaching for his crown to take it off and seems to be going to fall down as well! I like this idea of making 2009 a year of just simple worship as we remove all our earthly crowns and lay them before Jesus as we stay there completely in awe of Him! Blessings, -Andrew
I always like taking a closer look at the details of a painting, since the painter most of the time puts a lot of things in a painting that you wont notice on first sight. Look at the magi real close it seems that the third is a woman. Which is pretty funny since somehow I always had a picture in my mind that it were three males. Weird, since they might as well have been female. Here's a larger image of the painting http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/47/Gentile_da_Fabriano_002.jpg

It's such a powerful rebuke. Like Jesus' words to Martha in Luke 10.41, or to Judas in Matt 26. Thank you for those thoughts. And, on a tangential note, God's been blessing us in Sydney through 'Consuming Fire'.
What a great piece of art this is, it's so good to see and appreciate such classic art. It’s such a timely reminder that with time many things appear on the outside to change, the style of painting, the style of worship, but at the very core of what really matters, the values remain the same, the glory of the King.
Thanks for this, Great pic. To give our gifts, such a hard thing to do some times. We fear that we will lose but we know God will only multiply them. I also love all the people leading into the city just to see him. What adoration
The English word "Adoration" is much like the Portuguese word for worship. As we adore God, worship lights the blaze to know Him and to honor Him with the gifts of our lives. The Magi closest has dropped all the trappings of dignity, their worth not even being considered worth anything compared with seeing Lord Jesus. Knowing Jesus....
I know this is a little late, as it is February, but here in Winnipeg, it is still very winter like. I did want to say that I have been so touched by the words of that song, "In the bleak mid winter". I'm not sure what it is that touches me so, but i think it has to do with the humility the song conveys. It draws me to wonder what I can give to my King. There is such a pull to do things for God when so often He just wants my adoration. Thanks for the reminder.
