New Trends in Music
Below is an extract from an American Newspaper objecting to new trends in church music.
“There are several reasons for opposing it. One, it’s too new. Two, it’s often worldly, even blasphemous. The new Christian music is not as pleasant as the more established style. Because there are so many new songs, you can’t learn them all. It puts too much emphasis on instrumental music rather than godly lyrics. This new music creates disturbances making people act indecently and disorderly. The preceding generation got along without it. It’s a money making scam and some of these new music upstarts are lewd and loose.”
Who were they attacking? It wasn't Delirious? or Matt Redman. They were attacking the hymn writer Isaac Watts, famous for writing ‘When I survey,’ in 1723! The old hymns once upon a time were radical and cutting edge. Our music and our songs must also always be pushing new ground. Let's go for it.

that's hilarious! Maybe that's why all the older people in my church keep asking for hymns...they are just trying to re-live their glory days of being rebellious hymn singers!
Hale-Yeah!
16Aug07this must have been written by a very traditional peson. Saying that preceding generation got along without is like saying the preceding generation got along without computers, of course they did, they didn't have them, just like they didn't have the same style of music that we have in worship now. When amazing grace was first written it was so radical... people likely hated it becuase it was different,. Churches that say we don't need new music drive me insane.
TIm, I don't know if you yourself read this or what, but maybe you could give me a email back to let me know how you deal with churches who are against new music...I get rebuked every week for doing "new music" the church is familiar with the songs because I teach them to them, but yet I still get rebuked even though I do a mix of hymns and new stuff...
Any help on how to deal with this would be really helpful, as I'm at a loss. I've explained to the pastor that since the new music has been in play we have gained new members who want to worship with us and they came to our church because they heard we have good music.. i don't think you should go to a church because of the music, but it is a fact that people (especially young people) will go to a church that has good, new music.

16Aug07I just read that quote a few weeks back in Paul Baloche's "God Songs". It's almost funny to see the same cycles repeating over time.
I'm still looking forward to hearing more about the United States edition of worship central!

16Aug07It's so true that history repeats itself! Just as in this story, hymns are once again the forefront of Christian worship music. After many years dominated by the "Jesus is my boyfriend" style of songs, thoughtful, poetic, theologically deep songs are springing up and causing a ruckus!

17Aug07Yeah! Amen to that. But for songs to be deep and theological it doesn't mean that they cant conform to the current trends in music.
