New Album: Day 2

Day 2. It's been a long one. But a great one! We started at 10am and have just finished at 10:30pm. We've tracked 3 songs and I'm really pleased with how it's sounding. Passionate and expressive.

The way we've been doing things is to work on the arrangements, trying different ideas as a band. We then track a number of takes until we get a version that feels great. Once the take feels strong, the drums, bass and electric repair any mistakes. Stu G (electric) has then added some extra guitar ideas. At a later date we'll work more on guitars, keys, vocals, strings etc...

We started the day with a song called, "Centre of it all." This song looks at God as creator - the one with whom it all begins and ends. It's pretty rocky and we've gone for a Lenny Kravitz, Foo Fighters feel. It starts with just drums and electric and then the bass kicks in for the verse. I'm pleased with it. There's lots of stuff to add to the song but it's a great foundation to build on. It started off sounding too jolly, but we quickly put an end to that!

The next song, "God of Justice," took a while. It's hard when you track a song you've been doing live. You want to find something fresh that captures the song, but you have a strong idea in your mind about how it should come across. Anyway I think we got there. It starts with piano and Stu G has found some stunning guitar parts. Very haunting. I'm really pleased with the journey of the song - it feels very emotive. We've got a cool instrumental section, which really adds something to the song. When tracking one take we ended up jamming at the end of the song. Something really cool came out of this spontaneous section. Cool melodies and sounds interacting with one another. It felt like a real God moment at the end of the song.

The final song we tracked (it's been a long day!) was "Everything." For me this is one of the key songs I wanted to get right. Again it took us quite a while to get there. We spent ages debating over the speed. Starting at 155 bpm, moving to 148 bpm, changing to 150 bpm, trying 149 bpm and then finally ending up at 150 bpm (Am I sounding like a complete geek?!). Some great piano parts, an awesome guitar riff, a huge climax to the song. I'm very excited.

Sadly Stu G leaves us tonight. But Dan Wheeler has joined us to play guitar tomorrow - which will be awesome. After a long, but very productive day we're going to chill for a bit, before getting some shuteye.

This is a fantastic insight Tim , thanks!
I had no idea you spent such long hours recording an album. Hope you find focus more relaxing.

Cant wait for the new album!  When I heard some of your songs at Focus I went to looking for it in the cd section there - Kris set me straight on it being worked on, this is certainly going to be a strong album that has some really annointed stuff, good work Tim.
