Back in the Studio

Today I arrived in Nashville to carry on working on my new album. I'm spending tuesday and wednesday working on vocals, before flying to L.A to track the four remaining songs left to record. I'm going to try and keep up the daily blogs on how it's all going.
I'm staying with Nathan Nockels and his family in Nashville. He has his own studio in the basement of his house. Very cool. I pretty much got straight off the plane to start working on a vocal for a song called 'Clinging to the cross.' The way we did it was for me to sing the song through a few times to get the right vibe and feel. Then we focused on different sections. So for this song I sang the first verse and chorus through - probably about 8-10 times. Nathan would help direct on how to sing the sections. We then moved on to sing the 2nd verse and chorus. Again we did that about 8 or so times. Then we worked on the bridge and final chorus. It's a cool way of doing it as it keeps you more focused. When doing vocals there's so much to consider. Pitch, pronunciation, passion, phrasing, power - all begining with 'P.' By doing it this way it gives me more freedom to be expressive and not worry over every note. After I've finished a vocal, Nathan will go through and find the best takes and compile it all together to make it sound great. That's the plan anyway.
I'm now half dead so am off to bed. Tomorrow I have an early morning meeting with the EMI guys and then I crack on to record more vocals. Fun times!!

sounds exciting... are they all christians you're working with? if not, surely they can't help but be intrigued by some of the lyrics and the passion they speak of...?
